Outdoor Classroom Dedication

Following the Mass, Archbishop Lucas formally dedicated the new Gerald Petersen Outdoor Classroom at St. Augustine Indian Mission. Lunch followed which was provided in part by Pillen Family Farms of Columbus, Nebraska and the Winnebago Kateri Group.

The Outdoor Classroom was a project that took nearly two years to complete. Planned by nationally known planning group Nature Explore, the new space includes a variety of areas for students to learn in the areas of science, math, music and movement and art. A fire area and water feature were included among a multi-level platform, performance space, Native Ciserec (Chee sedech – traditional Winnebago earth lodge), and trails that lead students and visitors throughout the space. Native plants will adorn the space and be used by the students for learning and by the community for Native sacred ceremonies.
