St. Aug’s Students win Chief Standing Bear Essay contest

Two St. Augustine Indian Mission students were named as two of five essay winners for the Chief Standing Bear Essay Contest sponsored by McDonald?s. The awards were presented at the Annual Chief Standing Bear Breakfast which was held on Friday, May 10, 2013 at the Embassy Suites in LaVista, Nebraska. The students received a $100 gift certificate and were able to read their essays at the breakfast.

St. Augustine student awarded by Children’s Scholarship Fund

Austin, a 7th grade student at St. Augustine Indian Mission, was recognized by the Children’s Scholarship Fund (CSF) for his leadership and service to others. The award was presented at the annual CSF luncheon, held in Omaha on June 5, 2013. Austin’s parents are Don and Cathy Blackbird. Don is our principal, and Cathy is our school lunch program coordinator. There was an added degree of difficulty involved in nominating him, as we did it without his parents knowledge! Austin is pictured to the left with the archbishop of Omaha, Most Rev. George J. Lucas.

St. Augustine’s Reading Initiative

Two years ago, St. Augustine Indian Mission instituted a new reading program for our students. The project was part of a challenge made by board member, Anne Hubbard to increase the reading scores of our students in an effort to help them succeed in all curricular endeavors. The reading challenge has proven to be one of the most significant academic changes made in our nearly 105 year history. The attached chart shows the incredible progress made by our students thanks to the reading challenge.
